In my field of research mainly Computer Science and Telecom Engineering there are two main approaches regarding authorship order: the most common is alphabetical order. However when the work was done within the framework of a Phd thesis then the Phd student is the first author. In this latter case the following order might be alphabetical or respectively to the contribution of each supervisor. In any case, last author has in most cases not specific value in CS and EE fields.
